NEW YORK, January 31, 2022 – ��ɫ, the world’s largest provider of language and technology solutions for global business, today announced 2021 billed revenues of $1.11 billion. This represents a 31% increase over 2020’s total and marks the company’s 29th consecutive year of revenue growth since its founding in 1992. In the fourth quarter, total sales grew by 33% relative to 2020 Q4, adding more than $83 million in topline revenue.

The ��ɫ Global Group includes more than 30 individual operating companies that work both independently and collaboratively to help clients achieve their global business goals and objectives. The revenue increase of $260 million in absolute dollars was from a combination of organic growth and strategic transactions completed in 2021. These strategic transactions included Semantix, the market leader for language services in the Nordics; Webcertain, a specialty provider of global digital marketing and advertising services; Skilltelligence, which optimizes and personalizes data for clients' AI systems; and LMK Clinical Research, which expanded the TMF (Trial Master File) services and training offerings of ��ɫ Life Sciences.

��ɫ’s strategy of providing solutions that are global in scope but local in delivery continues to drive its business. The combination of strategic transactions and new office openings in 2021 expanded ��ɫ’s local presence in twelve new cities, including Istanbul, Delhi, York, and seven new locations in the Nordics. This increased local presence significantly enhances the company’s ability to provide personalized service for clients.

Purchase of ��ɫ’s technology products and associated services continues to be a substantial driver of growth. In 2021, over 500 new clients deployed ��ɫ’s GlobalLink solutions to help streamline multilingual content management and digital initiatives.

People who are self-employed or work freelance are often afraid of taking a holiday. But there are ways to take time away without losing work.

Having a lack of work/life balance is not only unhealthy, it’s also unnecessary. Balancing time between being the most productive worker and taking time off is possible. Here’s how.

Why You Need Time Away from Work as a Freelancer

Taking a vacation can:

Improve your physical and mental health
Reduce stress
Help you sleep better
Put you in a better mood
Contribute to good blood pressure and cholesterol

Traveling gives you the opportunity to put aside your daily to-do list and explore new places. Whether you’re in another country or exploring your own backyard, there are always new adventures and experiences to be had.

According to Forbes, taking time off is central to a person’s well-being. It can even increase efficiency and output upon returning to work, and you might also notice feeling more present and motivated in terms of work commitments.

Further, getting out of the office can reignite your capacity for educational development. When you allow your brain to completely relax, it’s more open to knowledge and new concepts. For example, you may be more motivated to explore education websites, such the Expert Learning Center, which is specifically designed to help linguists learn more, grow more, and earn more!

How to Take Time Away

Now that you’re ready to confirm your time off, here’s a game plan for going on holiday and retaining your clients while you’re away:

1) Prep before your holiday

What’s the busiest season for the clients you work with most? Retaining your primary clients and accounts is more feasible if you avoid taking a holiday during that time.

Save additional funds for the vacation. Take an extra project or two a day—as long as you’re still leaving enough time for best practices. Project managers will appreciate you going the extra mile before your holiday and remember it.

Clear out all of your administrative tasks that build up. Submit invoices, reorganize style guides, and make sure you’ve completed your most time-sensitive projects.

Next, it’s time to give your notice.

2) Communicate

Communicating to project managers and team leads that you’re going on holiday is a big part of planning ahead. We recommend at least a two weeks’ notice so your clients can prepare themselves to manage without you.

Also, if you’re visiting nearby, it gives them an opportunity to invite you to their office and meet in-person.

Make sure that in your request, you include the dates you’ll be out of office and how you can be reached in case of emergency, or who to reach out to instead.

3) Suggest coverage in your ��ɫ Network

By leaving the client and their workload in capable hands, you’re increasing resources for the client and for their company.

When you return, the client may notice faster turnaround times as there’s two dedicated quality freelancers working on that account. This instills confidence and leads to even more work. Not to mention your trust has fostered good will between you and your colleague. Everyone wins!

At ��ɫ, your freelance colleagues are some of the strongest, most valuable resources for you to rely on. Ask an existing and qualified ��ɫ freelancer to be available for work while you’re gone. Then, introduce your project managers and team leads to them before you leave.

4) Crafting an out-of-office message

The final piece of the puzzle is crafting an effective out-of-office auto-generated reply. Here are some tips to help you create one:

Any good communication starts with a greeting, such as a pleasant “Hello!”
Keep it short, sweet, and professional. Grammarly and Indeed both note being too friendly or revealing too much information within an OOO message is a “don’t.”
Include the specific dates or time period you will be unavailable.
Determine whether you’ll be replying to emails during your holiday or if you have a colleague covering emergency requests while you’re out.
Ask yourself if the message is appropriate for every audience.
Finish with a simple “Thank you.” Good manners never go out of style!

By completing this checklist, you should feel confident taking time away from work while also maintaining important working relationships.

��ɫ recognizes there are so many important stories to be told, but we have chosen to spend June, largely recognized as Pride Month listening instead of speaking. As we enter July we are choosing to share what we have heard, and amplify the histories of our LGBTQ+ employees. While we encourage our readers to research for themselves, the significant and colorful history of Pride we hope you’ll find this brief introduction educational. Many Pride events are held during June (especially in New York City where our North American headquarters is located) to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which took place towards the end of June 1969. The LGBTQ+ community chooses to memorialize this historic event in many ways, organizing marches, parades, art, social media exposure, and ongoing educational endeavors, so the impact of the LGBTQ+ community remains accessible and visible.

Now, as you let the bridge of the song excite your sense of fun and joy, also consider that if you don’t identify as LGBTQ+, you’ve never felt the need to “come out!” ��ɫ never forgets our Core Values, one of which is Diversity. Working moms have an enormous responsibility to juggle a full-time job with family life. Add social distancing, school closures, and way too much screen time, and you might just say we’re living a recipe for disaster.

As weeks go by, we find ourselves adjusting to the “new normal,” knowing in the back of our very tired minds, our routine and toilet-paper-roll art project may have to change again in a few weeks. The COVID-19 pandemic is evolving every day, but what remains constant at ��ɫ is the hard work and dedication by our 6,000+ employees worldwide, including our working parents. And within our massive #WFH network exists the opportunity for colleagues to become closer, even as we’re physically distant. This is the case for #tptmoms, a global distro made a long while ago by a bunch of our working moms looking for ways to unite. More than anything, it’s a place where colleagues share little stories, pictures, and advice.

For Mother’s Day in North America, we polled our moms on what it means to be a working mom at ��ɫ and for advice on how to stay productive while keeping the little ones occupied at home.

What Do ��ɫ Moms Love Most about Being a #TPTMom?

With schools and daycares closed and remote work becoming standard, ��ɫ moms are rolling two full-time responsibilities into one. But with such challenges come unique opportunities. Lisa Chan, a Senior Vice President based in Washington, DC, says that “showing [her] boys, Owen, 10, and Connor, 12, that you can work hard and have fun while doing it and also giving them a glimpse into the business world in a way that makes sense to them” has been the most rewarding part of being a ��ɫ mom working from home.

With Lucas, 9, and Lilly, 7, Rebekah McGowan, a Department Manager based in Wilmington, MA, appreciates “��ɫ being supportive of a strong work-life balance. I’m always able to put family first, and this support has allowed me to increase productivity and contributions to ��ɫ, even through these times of remote working.”

Stephanie Simper, a Federal Program Manager based in Washington, DC, enjoys extra time with her son Navee, 8, and values “being in touch with other moms who are in the same boat. Sharing and laughing about daily struggles makes it a little bit easier.”

Regional Directors Johanna Weis, based in Paris, France, and Meghan McCrea, based in Raleigh, NC, both agree that having “understanding and family-oriented managers and support teams at ��ɫ provides flexibility to juggle being a mom and working full time.”

Two Full-Time Jobs Rolled into One

While all of our #tptmoms are grateful for extra time with family amid a global shift to remote working, they admit that it is not without its own unique challenges.

Heidi Campbell, a Director of Strategic Accounts working for ��ɫ’s NYC headquarters, values that her children “are gaining a good sense of reality and seeing how hard both of their parents work.” But admits it has been challenging “to explain to our younger children when [she needs] to be on calls instead of downstairs playing with them.”

This is what Heidi’s “end-of-day wrap-up” looks like, and we absolutely love it!

Danielle Giannecchini, a Director of Business Development based in London, UK, relates to feeling guilty about her work-life balance becoming less divided but uses “livestreaming phys-ed sessions every morning” with children Sophia, 5, Joey, 4, and Eva, 1, to dedicate time each day to just focus on her kids.

Danielle’s kids are ready for bed after a long day that started off with a family workout.

Activities and Resources for Moms and Kids

Whether you need your child to stay (quietly) occupied while you take an important call or a way to focus on your mental health after a long day of working and mom-ing, our ��ɫ moms have many tips and online resources worth sharing:

For Kids:

Take a break from screen time with at-home research projects. Lisa finds this activity is useful for not only occupying her kids, but allowing them to “be creative and practice public speaking, all wrapped into one.” Meghan continues the learning for her kids with Pre-K Packs and other home learning packets.
Watch animal webcams. Stephanie likes using explore.org to show her son live webcams of animals from around the world, while Heidi opts for daily online viewings of the Cincinnati Zoo.
Go for walks. Many of our ��ɫ moms rely on walks around the neighborhood as a simple way to get much-needed fresh air. A scavenger hunt can provide lots of active fun—make a list of things to find, rate window rainbows, and away you go!

For Moms:

Only take reservations for adults. Whether you’re feeling ambitious and baking your own garlic bread or ordering in from your go-to local restaurant, what better way to treat yourself to a nice meal and adult conversation with your significant other or best friend over FaceTime?

“There is a lot of pressure in shifting to remote work with children around, especially for women who are often expected to manage other duties like cooking and laundry,” says Nancy Essebag-Christie, a Digital Marketing Specialist based out of Montreal, Canada. “After week two, I was totally fed up of cooking and asked my husband if he was willing to try meal kits* for a week while we each took turns putting our toddler to bed. It was a nice change to host #stayathome dinner dates that went past 7:00 PM.”

Get out your yoga mat or go for a run. If they’re looking to stay fit or just clear their head, our #tptmoms agree that these are two of their favorite ways to de-stress. While you certainly can incorporate your little ones into your routine, sometimes you just need alone time.

Celebrate yourself this weekend. How are you fitting in “time for me” this Mother’s Day?

Sabrina Riaz, a Director of Strategic Accounts based in Montreal, Canada, and #tptmom–to-be has a few plans to celebrate her impending motherhood, even if it can’t involve a nice glass of bubbly this year. “This Mother’s Day, I will not only be celebrating my mom, but also be carving out some time for myself ahead of the big day. Instead of reading up on the top 10 strollers, or which swaddle method is the best, it’ll be spent binge-watching Netflix and eating takeout."

As a global company, ��ɫ has access to many rich histories, and we value opportunities to honor the nationalities of our Freelance Expert community. We’re kicking off the month of May by highlighting Cinco de Mayo and looking at the ways a few of our Spanish-speaking localizers celebrate this day with their friends and loved ones.

While Cinco de Mayo celebrations have become increasingly popular within the United States, it isn’t as widely commemorated in Mexico—which might come as a surprise, as May 5^th is commonly mistaken for Mexican Independence Day! The origins of Cinco de Mayo are tied to a pivotal moment in Puebla, Mexico’s history when Mexican forces defeated the French in the Battle of Puebla (La Batalla de Puebla) during the French-Mexican war. Although historical, winning the battle was not the most significant triumph within the war; it added much needed symbolic value to the 1862 Mexican government and their current resistance movement. Fast forward to present day and commemorating this battle has grown into commercialized celebration polarizing traditional Mexican, Hispanic, and Latino cuisine, and other symbols of their heritage.

If You Journey to Puebla, Mexico

While we’ve grown accustomed to “Americanized” representations of Cinco de Mayo, many aren’t as familiar with how (or to what extent) the holiday is actually celebrated. So, we asked a few of our Spanish-speaking freelancers to share their knowledge and experiences.

Many were candid in saying they let this day pass by like any other. However, they did share that, if someone wanted to authentically commemorate with the people who care the most about this day, it’s time to book a flight to Puebla, Mexico! Puebla is lauded as an excellent destination for exposure to culture and authenticity. It’s the fourth-largest city in Mexico, and well-known for its hospitality, restful ambiance, and bright colonial architecture. Go for the mild temperatures and stay for the flavorful culinary history and an encompassing look into their cultural art scene.

Authenticity is in Residence

Booking a trip not in your immediate future? Not a problem! If you have a desire to get into the spirit from the comfort of your own home, a number of our Spanish-speaking freelancers have offered up suggestions on authentic fare and activities for you to explore.

Food Fit for Family Time

Pozole, which just sounds like a comfort food we all should add to our home-cooking staples, is a seasoned traditional Mexican soup made using hominy, meat, chili peppers, cabbage, onion, garlic, and avocado—and topped with fresh lime or a dollop of salsa. Sounding sweet enough to be a dessert, Chiles en nogada calls for poblano chiles stuffed with picadillo, and topped with a walnut-based cream sauce (nogada). To add to the sweetness, panochera apple, sweet-milk pear, and criollo peach are added.
Proving veggies can steal the show is Elote, a sweet corn dish customarily smothered in a spicy mayo, with cream, chili powder, and cotija cheese. Elote is typically found at Mexican street fairs and festivals.

��ɫ couldn’t have been more excited to see the international hit Parasite sweep accolades at the 92^nd Academy Awards, AKA the Oscars! Parasite’s win brought recognition to deserving Korean programmers, screenwriters, actors, producers, and studios. It also highlighted how subtitles in particular enable audience members to experience a film or television in its native language as intended, but still appreciate and understand the dialogue. Don’t worry: there are no movie spoilers ahead, just a peek behind the curtain to explore how subtitling enabled a fascinating movie to resonate with a global audience.

While no one is claiming subtitles are fully responsible for Parasite’s Oscar wins, the film’s story couldn’t have reached non-Korean speakers without good subtitles. By linking the dialogue to depictions and original language, subtitles allow for better comprehension. We learned by speaking with Hannah Brehm of ��ɫ’s Media Services team that this isn’t easy to do, especially because subtitlers have obstacles like character limitations and time restrictions. Not to mention, they have to make the judgment call on what word choices are going to drive that connection to the on-screen visuals.

Subtitles are not meant to be a word-for-word translation; instead, their function is to articulate what the actors are saying by universally translating meaning. Audience members are not simply reading text scrolling on a screen, they are receiving a painted picture of information, much like reading a novel. Subtitles become a crucial component in the viewer’s emotional experience, and conveying concepts such as humor, sadness, or joy which add another layer of difficulty when the viewer’s background might not be the same. As a company, ��ɫ is happy that the appreciation and support for this film has reached global acclaim and only seems to be growing!

Bridging Language and Cultural Gaps is just a Click Away

Now that you have a basic understanding of how Parasite used subtitles to connect with the plot and storyline, let’s briefly explore other programming that touches on Asian characters and cultures. There is an entire world of intricate and zestful programs available to you through Netflix, Hulu, and Rakuten Viki, just to name a few streaming services. Popular shows that feature Asian characters and glimpses into different cultures that you might have already heard of are Boys Over Flowers, Queer Eye: We're in Japan!, and Tidying Up with Marie Kondo based on the KonMari method and Kondo’s bestselling book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing. All these shows not only use subtitles as an avenue of audience engagement, but have other significant translation components such as interpretation and instances of cultural adaptation.

Translation bridges language and culture gaps within media by playing on our universal understanding of love, self-improvement, and family dynamics, as evidenced by the popular shows mentioned above. Fundamentally, they show us we don’t all need to speak the same language to feel compassion for unrequited love or the desire for a clean, organized lifestyle.

Fun Fact: If you check out some of the behind the scenes content for the Queer Eye season within Japan, they actually discuss how they used interpreters and locals to achieve a culturally sensitive program—even if the interpreters aren’t seen in real time.

Break a Leg – ��ɫ’s Impact

Because of the intentionality of its subtitles, visuals, cinematography, and plot, Parasite rightfully joined the hall of Oscar winners. To cap off the film’s historic night, Parasite became the first foreign-language Best Picture Oscar winner in the program’s 92-year history. Many talented teams and individuals played a role in the film’s international success, including our Lylo Media Group division, who—in collaboration with the company The Jokers Films—helped bring Parasite to French-speaking moviegoers. No matter the viewers, subtitling work connects an audience with the universal concept of storytelling through media.

It’s finally January, the winter holidays are over, and people are looking forward to the opportunities that come with the start of a new year. ��ɫ knows that not everybody will create a vision board or write their goals on the bathroom mirror, but we want to assist you in kicking of this new decade right!

Use these tips to help frame a prosperous new year:

Back to Business

2019 was chock-full of cha-cha changes, and we want to make sure our relationship with you reflects that. Now is the perfect time to email your Vendor Management representative and update your contact information. More than ever, important information is being communicated via email or connected to physical addresses. Project Managers (PMs) often call with prospective projects, and if you want to receive those assignments, please make sure to keep your information up to date!

We, in turn, are constantly keeping you updated through ��ɫ’s HUB with Breaking News items, information on the Services we offer, and links to your necessary ��ɫ resources. Likewise, the positive feedback for ��ɫ’s Expert Learning Center has been phenomenal. Please keep the momentum going! Self-Care Isn't Just a Buzz Word

Speaking of wellness…��ɫ is busier than ever, and that means more work for you! With growth and opportunity abound, it’s just as important to stop and smell the roses. Here are some simple things you can do to practice a healthy work-life balance:

Don’t forget to make hydration a priority when working long hours for our big clients. Add fruits or vegetables to your water for extra flair.
Thinking about getting back into the gym? Find a gym buddy and remember to start slow. Try speed walking on an incline for 20 minutes, a 15-minute yoga class, or finally carry all those accumulated gift boxes down the stairs. If you prefer to workout at home, invest in a reliable yoga mat, and find an online workout video that speaks to your style of movement.
Put on a face mask and perform a mini spa session in between projects.
Plan a spring garden. Winter will be over before you know it.
Do some light reading. Check out ��ɫ’s Freelance Blog with posts written just for you.
Update your 2020 calendar with all the conferences and ��ɫ office visits you want to prioritize this year.
Treat yourself. Invest in cozy, “work from home” loungewear and some signature business pieces for networking with other freelancers.
